What are SMART goals?
SMART goal-setting is one of the best ways to set a goal. SMART goals allow you to flesh out your goal to ensure it aligns with your ability. SMART is an acronym for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
- Specific – your very specific goal.
- Measurable – how you will measure it.
- Achievable – if your goal is achievable.
- Relevant – how relevant the goal is to you.
- Time-bound – what the time frame will be to achieve your goal?
SMART goals allow you to identify the specifics of a goal which can ultimately better allow you to understand what you will need to do to reach a goal realistically.
This free SMART goal-setting worksheet includes each section of this goal-setting method so you can explore your goal in more detail and hopefully create more achievable goals.
The best thing about SMART goals is you can use them for any kind of goal you have whether it’s fitness, work or for hobbies.
Use the following SMART goal-setting breakdown as an example of how you can create your own SMART goals.
1. Specific
Let’s say you want to lose weight before your June vacation – something many of us have wanted to do at some point. How can you make your goal more specific? If you specify how much weight you want to lose before June, you can then see how realistic that goal is going to be.
For example, you might say you want to lose 10 lbs before June.
2. Measurable
The next thing you’ll need to do once you have specified your goal is to ask yourself if it’s measurable. How can you measure your 10lb weight loss? Can you use scales and if so, how often will you weigh yourself? Could you wear any fitness trackers to keep track of your calorie expenditure each day? If you can measure your progress, you’ll find it keeps you more motivated to keep going.
How will you know when you have reached your goal?
3. Achievable
Your goal needs to be realistic and attainable. Sometimes it’s easy to set out grand goals but if your goal is too far out of what is achievable for you at that time, you may find you become distracted or unmotivated when you realise how hard it is to reach your goal. For example, ask yourself how realistic it would be for you to lose 10lbs before June. It is already the beginning of May? Can you lose that amount of weight safely in four weeks? Ask yourself;
How realistic is it for me to reach this goal?
4. Relevant
Once you’ve decided if your goal is achievable or not, you’ll need to focus on how relevant it is to you. Why are you trying to reach this goal? Does it align with your other goals? For example, if you’re trying to lose those 10lbs before June, are you also trying to spend 90 minutes running each week? Does this goal really matter to you in the long term? Ask yourself;
Is this the right time for me to chase this goal?
5. Time-bound
The next part of SMART goal-setting is making sure you have a defined start and end point. If you don’t have a time scale for your goal you may find you end up drifting from what you need to do to reach your goal. For example, if you want to lose 10 lbs by June, what specific date do you want to reach this goal? Ask yourself;
What do you need to do today as the starting point? And then what will the endpoint look like?
Keep your SMART goals specific
Although you need to make your goals very specific, try and keep them simple so they are as realistic as possible. If you’re just starting out creating SMART goals, try and focus on one at a time until you get used to the process. If you try and set too many goals at once, you may find that you lose sight of why you’re doing them.
